Getting your degree online is a convenient way to better your career. More education typically means a better job and a better paycheck. With an online school, you can take classes from anywhere and get your degree on your own terms. However, just because it is convenient, doesn’t mean it is easy. There are some pitfalls that you, the prospective online student, will have to avoid.
Typically, online degree coursework is done in the comfort of your own home. Therein lies the problem. Home is full of distractions. It’s so easy to just watch the television for a couple of hours. Before you know it, you’re tired and headed for bed. A day has gone by without schoolwork. How many of those can you afford to have?
Just like any traditional college, online schools give you work complete. Reading, writing, and all sorts of developmental assignments will be expected of you. Any degree, whether it comes from a traditional school or from an online institution, requires work. No matter what else you do during the day, you have got to get your coursework done.
To be successful with your online schooling, you will need to block off time every day to complete your assignments. You must treat the coursework with the same respect you would give a traditional school. Even though you’re not living in a dormitory, work is expected of you, and poor marks will be awarded for poor work.
I think it’s best to set up a schedule you can follow for each assignment block. For example, if your course is broken into six week-long sections, you will have one week to complete the current assignments before moving onto the next section. Take the first day and complete all the reading for the section. Then, take the second day to do any coursework related to the reading, and also start taking part in any online classroom discussion. Then, while still participating in the discussion, take the rest of the week to work on the big assignment for that section. For graduate-level work, it’s common to write a 10 - 12 page paper each week, so you’ll need plenty of time to research.
Getting a degree online isn’t more work — nor is it less — than working toward a degree at a traditional institution. Though you will be in a completely different environment, you will still have to complete the work to earn your degree. Don’t let the little things distract you. Take the time you need each day, and before you know it, the work will become habit. Then it’s only a matter of time. You’ll get your degree and you will be on your way to a better job and a more comfortable life.
